When I was very little, no older than four, I remember going to church with my parents. This was before Osborne Neighborhood Church opened. We went to a church just a few blocks from where we lived.
I remember (this was the early 50s) that the ladies all wore their dresses and hats with net over their faces or a part of their faces. The men were in suits. There was no children's church then, so children were expected to sit in church and be quiet. I don't know if there was even a nursery. Church was a place you came to listen and be quiet.
Anyway, I remember this one Sunday sitting in church and there was some music happening. I don't know if the congregation was singing or if there was a soloist or choir. All I know is that there was music, and I was "feelin' the beat." :) So I started clapping in time to the music. I can hardly believe that my mom didn't stop me, but she didn't.
After the song was over, I remember the people in the church clapping (something that was unheard of in those days. They were all smiling at me while they clapped, like I had just come up with the best idea ever!
I remember feeling quite pleased with myself!
